Herding sheep and the U
On the 18th of April we herded sheep during a U workshop ‘Building the sustainability movement’ for a multi-national. Paul Bos is a farmer that invites managers in primitive circumstances to be on his farm. While I was explaining the different levels of listening a lamb was being born in the same stable behind me. We stopped and attended. During the workshop we were invited to bring the sheep from one meadow to another.
What were our learnings doing so:
Observe, observe, observe: who is the boss (third in the row actually), the herd consists of different kind of sheep (lambs, mothers, old, young etc), see what your intervention does to the flock.
Sheep walk out of themselves, don’t push them. Just prevent them going into the direction you don’t want them to go.
Because they walk while eating they are always on the move (just like managers). If they go a dead end, let them, they will be back and look for your direction.
One sheep goes a certain direction, all will follow (the Dutch proverb: “If one sheep crosses the dam the rest will follow” is proven true).
Let go of your tendency to act. Observe where they go.
But act in an instant when they tend to go the wrong direction.
It was fun and a great experience, check out his website: www.boerbos.nl

ROA and OOA disciplinary rules unanimously ratified
In December 2007, the revised disciplinary rules for the consulting sector were unanimously ratified by the Dutch Association of Management Consultants (ROA) and the Order of Organisation Experts and Advisors (OOA). As a member of the executive committee of the ROA, Rolf Sterk has been the driving force behind these revisions over the past three years. The code is geared to current practice in the consulting business. The new disciplinary rules are more practical and will provide those involved with more decisive answers.
